His friend’s sister then wants to learn how to surf, which places our hero in a dilemma.There are small problems with the film like a script that is all over the place and that doesn’t have a tight structure, which is a pity, as the theme is quite inspiring and focuses on how a young person copes with a friend’s death.As far as script problems are concerned, certain characters, like the pizza shop owner, wonderfully captured in Morné du Toit’s performances, disappears halfway through.Having said that, viewers might find this experiment interesting and even inspiring. It takes Afrikaans film forward, although not with such huge leaps as other forthcoming productions.

This entire movie is about the grieving process that his character, Tiaan, is going through and how he has to find the courage to get back out there and surf again and the movie would have fallen flat if Van Der Walt’s performance was lacking.I know this goes without saying because this movie is South African produced but this movie feels really South African. From its humour to its overall look, it has this great local energy and spirit to it which I absolutely loved. There’s just something about seeing people who speak the way you speak; think the way you think and live in places that you have been on screen.This all changes when Yvette (Dirkie’s twin sister) comes back to town after spending the year with her father after her parents’ divorce. Yvette is determined to win Wave Seekers – a tournament Tiaan and Dirkie both dreamed of participating in but she doesn’t know how to surf and implores Tiaan to teach her so that she can fulfill a promise she made to her brother during his funeral.
